Perks

It's early morning, march 4th. I haven't had my coffee and I'll be on the road all day today. The new file is just like the old file only it has more pages. I've added the unedited perks, which is the system I'm using for "leveling up." The idea is that advancement is fun, interesting, and will help you build out abilities and traits that are unique. You'll see what I mean when you read it. They are also subject to change.

The other thing I wanted to talk about was that I received a question about the Contacts, specifically the spirituality. And to answer the question in full, I'm working on implementing the last bit of character creation which actually reworks a lot of what's already there. It's taken me a while to find the words for the thoughts in my head, but I think they're finally coming together. Work-in-progress text is below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attunements. They cover everything from the physical to the spiritual. From muscle memory to learned knowledge. Normally attunement to an item, piece of knowledge, or person takes time, but when creating a Character, Players get to create a few to cover their history. They get to select a trained skill, a contact, and a personal artifact. They also might get one or more from the age they select.

Having attunement to an object, person, or knowledge means you have training or personal familiarity with it. Attunement could come from simply having an object for a long enough time that it gains significance, or it could come from a passionate friendship that springs up in a dangerous moment. Each attunement gets linked to a skill from the skill list and adds +2 to die rolls when it's used. The Character determines the skill their attunements are linked to at character creation, and when forming more attunements later. Some items (like history books, or fancy clothes) will have attunements automatically. These will be noted with the item’s description.

Gaining more attunements is one of the ways a Character can grow. Each person, place, or object comes with an Attunement Level, which shows the amount of things a Character has to do to become attuned to it. Things could be anything from studying to training. From spending time with it to using it in the field. All that matters is that you cannot repeat an action to further your attunement.

Some examples of ways to attune:

  • Spend a 6-hour period studying it
  • Spend a 6-hour period practicing it
  • Successfully use it while on an adventure
  • Keep it on your person for an entire adventure
  • Keep it on your person for two entire adventures (etc.)
  • Decorate it or personalize it in some way
  • Treat the object with a form of spiritual significance

The linked skill allows objects to be something different for each Character. Someone who is all about fighting might attune a sword to Power, aiding them in their attacks. But another might attune their sword to Anima, making it an object of spiritual importance. In this way even mundane objects can be attuned through prolonged periods of time. A favorite hoodie could be attuned to Will because it reminds a Character of their past tribulations. A personal journal could be attuned to Knowledge because a Character keeps diligent notes while the Player doesn’t. The options are seemingly limitless and put the importance on what the Player finds most interesting when it comes to their Character.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So basically this will be a way to naturally progress while going on an adventure. The items you use a lot can become attuned. There will be a way to increase attunement after the initial +2 as well. I'm still working it over in my head but I think it ties together a lot of what I'm thinking and have been trying to do for a very long time with games like Songbirds and Vultures.

Anyway, this is the first update. See you in the second.
